Logic Models
A logic model is a very helpful tool that can show how actions taken (independent variable) can lead to desired outcomes (dependent variable). If a causal relationship can be established, and careful thought given to possible interfering elements (called moderators), managers can think critically and use this tool to make informed and evidenced-based decisions to effect the desired results. Using the Covenant House Outreach Program as an example, this memo outlines how this useful analytical tool can benefit public administrators in identifying actionable steps to achieve their goals.
The SOAR Method to Strategic Planning
Evidence-informed decisions can be made with the use of tools such as interviews with key management and staff at any organization. The SOAR technique is but one of several approaches in which to capture necessary information that can help managers to make important decisions. Critical thinking in complex environments, such as in nonprofit hospital systems as described in this paper, benefit from analytical tools such as SOAR.
Summary of Course Material
The Performance Measurement and Reporting for Public and Nonprofit Organizations course was an in-depth examination of the analytical approach to developing plans to solving problems, and then effectively reporting results in a manner most likely to be understood by the target audience. Starting with the development of goals and objectives from an organization's mission and vision statements to then translating these into action plans and activities, the course outlined an effective way to turn theory into practice, including the potential pitfalls and faulty assumptions at each stage that could cause ineffective and inaccurate results. This course summary outlines both the analytical methods as well as possible pitfalls to avoid.
